Gay has had both extensive and diverse experience in over 25 years in the mining industry and scientific community. She has had long term on-site experience, academic accolades in specialist ecological research, and, as a consultant, met client requirements in a variety of projects.

Major projects and achievements
Gay has been recognised for academic and scientific excellence. Successes have included:
- Establishment of over 170 000 trees in the formation of the green belt in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
- Rehabilitation of over 380ha of degraded land, legacy sites, exploration sites, decommissioned sites, waste rock dumps and tailing storage facilities.
- Company being awarded the AMEEF Environmental Excellence Award (Industry) and the John Tonkin Greening Award (business) for the implemented rehabilitation programmes
- Bolliger Award (Australian Mammal Society)
- Young Achiever of the Year (Science and Technology)
