Job Title: Health and Safety Advisor, Sustainability East Asia
Position Description:
Sustainability East Asia is a leading provider of sustainable development consulting services in Mongolia. As part of the international “Sustainability” group of companies, we have been providing specialist advice to clients on environmental management, social responsibility, health and safety in Mongolia since 2008. We are seeking a highly motivated health and safety professional to join our expanding Ulaanbaatar office to assist with health and safety impact assessment, baseline studies, corporate social responsibility programmes and health and safety management plan projects. The consulting services will be completed within small professional teams under the guidance and supervision of the Senior HSE Advisor and Operations Manager.
The Health and Safety Advisor position will require a broad knowledge and experience of health and safety issues associated with new developments in Mongolia, including industrial, urban and mining projects. The successful candidate will have knowledge of international practices and standards for health and safety management plans, systems and practices relevant to standards and codes of practice in Mongolia. Specific experience such as contractor compliance, safety coaching, and lead auditor experience will be an asset. The work tasks will primarily focus on health and safety issues, but the position may be required to assist in a variety of disciplines including health, safety and environmental management.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the design and implementation of health and safety management plans, safety coaching, impact assessments and corporate social responsibility programmes.
- Work within small multi-disciplinary teams on health and safety impact assessment of new and expanded projects in Mongolia.
- Assist in the development, implementation, communication and maintenance of community, health, safety and environmental management systems for clients in a variety of industries.
- Assist in auditing health and safety management plans, systems and practices for clients against statutory requirements, industry best practice and relevant standards and codes of practice.
- Provide advice on compliance with Mongolian statutory obligations and international best practice relevant to health and safety management associated with new developments and foreign investment projects.
- Undertake fieldwork in the collection of health and safety data, engagement with communities and implementation of health and safety management plans.
- Conduct health and safety data entry, review and analysis for the preparation of technical reports to clients.
- Conduct desktop audits of contractors for third party verification services against statutory requirements, industry best practice and relevant standards and codes of practice.
- Undertake research and desktop reviews to assist consultant teams in the delivery of projects.
- Assist in the provision of professional reports in Mongolian and English language and assist in translation of technical reports between languages.
- Assist with international projects as part of the larger company, with the opportunity to work on Australian projects and potential travel to Australia and internationally.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- A degree in health, safety or environmental science, or a diploma in OHS. Cert IV in OHS would be accepted with minimum 6 years of experience.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in health and safety consulting, health and safety management or research programs.
- Highly motivated and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work in remote locations for extended periods.
- Well-developed organisational, planning and research skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in small professional teams.
- Excellent Mongolian and English language skills – both verbal and written.
- Proficient technical/scientific report writing skills.
- Effective oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality of service delivery and customer service.
- An ability to interact proactively, professionally and with discretion in all activities.
Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience:
- Advanced degree in relevant field.
- Experience in working for or consulting to international companies or organisations in Mongolia.
- Knowledge of international and national health and safety standards and legislation, including Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards.
- Experience in undertaking field or other relevant research work in Mongolia.
